Dr. Mindi Dayton and Dr. Paul Dayton of the Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa were instrumental in leading a landmark multicenter clinical study—now published in The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery—examining long-term bunion surgery outcomes of a cutting-edge approach to bunion correction known as triplanar tarsometatarsal (TMT) arthrodesis.
This four-year interim report analyzed outcomes from over 170 patients across 7 U.S. centers, all treated with a reproducible surgical system that corrects bunion deformity in all three planes (frontal, sagittal, and transverse). The Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa had the highest number of patients enrolled in the study. The findings confirmed:
Exceptionally low recurrence rates: just 0.8% using a strict definition (HVA > 20°)
Rapid recovery: patients returned to protected weightbearing in as little as one week
Sustained functional improvement: patients reported continued improvement in pain, mobility, and quality of life through 48 months
High satisfaction and durability: long-term results showed correction held over time with a low complication rate
Unlike traditional two-dimensional procedures, this modern triplanar approach directly addresses the rotational component of the deformity—a critical advancement for ensuring long-lasting correction and reducing the risk of recurrence.
“We are proud to see such strong, long-term results that reinforce what we’ve witnessed in our clinic every day—patients getting back on their feet faster, with more confidence and fewer complications,” said Dr. Mindi Dayton.
This research not only supports the effectiveness of the triplanar Lapiplasty® procedure but also highlights Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa’s role in advancing surgical standards nationwide.
