Bunion pain can significantly affect your quality of life—limiting mobility, footwear options, and daily comfort. When conservative treatments are no longer effective, surgery may offer lasting relief. At the Foot and Ankle Center of Iowa, we specialize in Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction, providing state-of-the-art care with trusted outcomes. From your first appointment to your final follow-up, we prioritize transparency and a patient-first approach.

Step 1: Initial Consultation (New Patient Appointment)
Your journey begins with a comprehensive in-office visit with one of our expert foot and ankle surgeons. This includes:
A full physical exam and xray review
Discussion of surgical options, including Lapiplasty®
A clear explanation of the procedure and recovery process
Time to ask questions and understand your options, both surgical and non-surgical
This appointment helps determine if surgery is the right choice and ensures you are well-informed.
Step 2: Scheduling Surgery & Fee
Once surgery is recommended, our team will help coordinate everything. We perform procedures at trusted local hospitals: Iowa Lutheran Hospital (Des Moines), Trinity Regional Medical Center (Fort Dodge), and Loring Hospital (Sac City).
To reserve your surgery date, we require a $200 scheduling fee. This covers administrative coordination such as securing your date, obtaining insurance approvals, and organizing pre-operative steps. The fee is non-refundable but will be applied toward your total surgical costs, and credited back to you if you do not have any patient responsibility after your insurance is fully processed.
Step 3: Insurance & Authorization
Our team handles the prior authorization process with your insurance company, if needed. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way, including:
Insurance benefits and coverage details
Expected out-of-pocket costs
Authorization timelines and confirmation
We're also here to help you understand your insurance plan or assist with questions.
Step 4: Medical Clearance
All patients need a physical exam within 30 days of surgery. This should be completed by your primary care provider and ensures you’re medically fit for anesthesia and surgery.
Depending on your health history, labs, an EKG, or specialist clearance may also be required. We’ll guide you through exactly what’s needed. In same cases, further workup may be needed, such as a cardiology appointment, depending on your overall health and medical history.
Step 5: Pre-Surgery Visit & Surgical Consent (In-Person Only)
Approximately two weeks before surgery, you’ll return to our office for a required in-person pre-op consultation. During this visit, you will:
Re-examine your foot to ensure no changes or other concerns are identified
Review your surgical plan with your surgeon
Ask final questions and discuss recovery
Sign required consent forms (wet signature only)
Receive pre-op instructions, including medication guidelines and what to expect on the day of surgery
This appointment ensures that everything is ready and that you and your surgeon are aligned before surgery day.
Step 6: Surgery Day
Your surgery will take place at either Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Trinity Regional Medical Center, or Loring Hospital. You’ll receive detailed instructions beforehand, covering:
Fasting and medication guidelines
What to bring
What to expect
The procedure typically lasts 1–2 hours, and patients go home the same day. Lapiplasty® provides a more stable correction than traditional techniques, supporting a stronger, more confident recovery.
Step 7: Follow-Up & Recovery
Your first post-op visit is usually scheduled 3–5 days after surgery. During this appointment, we’ll:
Check your incision and change your dressing
Review your recovery instructions
You’ll also receive personalized guidance on:
Pain management and incision care
Walking boot use and activity restrictions
Returning to work or physical activity
Potential physical therapy
We’ll continue to monitor your progress closely to ensure optimal healing and long-term results.
